Waxahatchee is the five year old brain child of singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. The most recent album “Ivy Tripp” was released on April 7th from Merge Records and is an elegant collection of thirteen songs. A definite graduation from the project’s first album “American Weekend,” which was self-recorded in Crutchfield’s parents’ house, “Ivy Tripp” is different and seems more thoughtful. Crutchfield’s wistful songwriting and voice are no different than the first two albums, but “Ivy Tripp” definitely packs a heavier punch.
The album was announced in in the beginning of the year and was highly anticipated for several months before its final release. ‘Air’ and ‘Under a Rock’ were the first singles released around the same time as the album’s announcement. Both of the singles embody the emotion of feeling lost that Waxahatchee was trying to convey in “Ivy Tripp.” The first few lyrics of ‘Under a Rock’—“Maybe you got your head caught in a ditch last night…”—showcase Waxahatchee’s heartier intentions with faster paced music.
