Monsterboy found success before finding a name. It all started when Chris played acoustic versions of a few songs he had been working on at some unofficial spots at Bonnaroo in 2017. At this festival, a representative of MTV.com heard the songs and interviewed the husband and wife team, which lead to a feature about their journey vying for a spot in the pop market. Chris and Veronica returned home with momentum and inspiration. From there, the couple spent the next year creating a sound that blended live instruments with electronic programming. Changing their mindset, each song was written to its fullest sound, without regard to falling into any certain genre or how it would be reproduced live. This lead to an exploration of tribal drums, saxophones, and other non-traditional instrumentation in the never ending quest for just the right sound for the songs, while still relying on a backbone of traditional rock band staples: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, keys, and a drumkit. In 2018, V joined Chris on stage playing her baritone saxophone. The duo debuted their scaled back version of the project at a few events in Austin, Little Rock, and Nashville. The sound was well received and opportunities encouraged them to fill out their sound by bringing in Justin Lee on drums, and he has brought a dynamic to the project that completes the sound and performance of the songs in a live setting. The Monsterboy sound is hard describe as it is more of a collection of songs; each song inspired by a snapshot moment of the 15 years that Chris and Veronica have been together and crafted to embody the feeling of a point in time rather than a season. That is why every song is so different in tone, instrumentation, and composition. Loosely speaking, the music is hybrid of indie pop blended with elements of alternative, country, and EDM.Monsterboy is currently releasing a new song every 3 weeks for a year, to embrace how every song has its own space. The songs are released so that each group of three represent the events that provided the spark. The Nashville Sessions came from our trips to the Music Capital of the World when the project was yet unnamed. ATX Sessions embrace the "Keep it Weird" mantra that is quintessential to Austin and SXSW. Upcoming sessions are inspired by the Flux Family Festivals and Bonnaroo. Less
