Description:
Transcribed from the original Santa Clara Vanguard arrangement by ear for the Brass Mafia, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of George Floyd. "I originally came in contact with this arrangement back in the years I marched SCV- 1984-87. I had the fortune of being the soloist on this song for those years and it always moved me to tears each time we reverently played it. It was a song we would pull out every once in a while to play as an encore and I’d learned then that the original arrangement was done by another drum corps, Madison Scouts. Occasionally all 64 horns from each group would partner up for an amazing 128 person brass spectacle where we would sidle up to each other and play their theme song together as one group. Occasionally they would play ours, Send in the Clowns." I hadn’t played it in 30 years, and there was no arrangement that I knew of. I certainly didn’t know we would film this in the spiritually and sonically amazing redwood amphitheater we found. Hell, I didn’t even know if we’d even try to tackle this arrangement, as we rarely ventured past the fun New Orleans style grooves that we are known for. But this day was special, and our hearts and minds were full and this group delivered the goods on the second read, and that’s what you hear in this video. I’m thankful for these Brass Mafia musicians that are so willing to play in the midst of a pandemic and for Adam Theis for pushing this through. My soul needed this.
