New Directions in Brass at The Sound Room ft. Dan Zemelman
Oakland, California, United States
Part of our monthly performance series!
At The Sound Room.
Feat. Dan Zemelman on piano.
New Directions in Brass dismantles expectations of what a brass ensemble can be, favoring creative risk over convention. Drawing from soul, hip-hop, psych-rock, and cinematic music, the group crafts finely tuned arrangements that traverse genres rarely explored by horn-driven bands. Known for recasting material more commonly associated with guitars—sometimes drawn from artists well outside the traditional jazz orbit—they create immersive, dynamic performances where bold brass writing meets unexpected subtlety. A project of the long-running Jazz Mafia Collective, New Directions in Brass is less about homage and more about reinvention.
