INTERVIEW WITH REMI JOURDAN, CEO OF DIGITAL MUSIC PLATFORM TUNETRAX

September 3, 2018 | Music Distribution - By Uptown Plug

Originally from Paris, France where he managed venues, Rémi Jourdan relocated to Los Angeles in 1997 to fully pursue his passion for both technology and music.

With extensive experience working with emerging artists, labels as well as operating concert venues and producing music festivals, Remi has witnessed first-hand the struggles experienced by under-represented musicians in growing their careers.

To fill an immediate need for his musician friends and industry colleagues, Rémi created a set of DIY online tools for them, a platform called Tunetrax.

Today, thousands of artists, music producers, record labels, publishers and music fans have signed up to Tunetrax, and are in control of the platform and the online communities they created.

Uptown Plug had the pleasure of chatting with Remi to talk about the history of Tunetrax, how artists can best manage their social media, amplifying fan engagement, tips for independent artists, and plenty more.

1. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR HISTORY AND WHY YOU STARTED TUNETRAX?

I spent many years running concert venues and producing music festivals and have booked thousands of performers in my career.

I started Tunetrax because I saw the struggles independent and under-represented artists faced in growing their career as well as the time they spent updating countless sites to share their content on social media with their fans, and thought I could help to streamline and make this process easier and more fun.

2. WHAT IS TUNETRAX?

Tunetrax is an all-in-one platform that helps artists to self-publish, distribute, book and promote their music.

Artists can upload and share their songs, videos, photos, blogs, newsletters and upcoming shows, all shareable instantly onto all major social networks and many other ones– and connect and interact with fans, booking agents and venues.

Artists keep 100% of their music sales, control of their copyrights and how their music is getting published and distributed.

3. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR ARTISTS WHEN IT COMES TO MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA?

From what I have witnessed working with many artists, the biggest challenge for them is to keep up with the fast-paced and ever-changing worlds of both social media and music.

Having a clear social media strategy, being responsive and staying consistent with social media activities are some of the challenges facing artists as well. Being able to generate high quality content properly formatted for social media can also be a challenge for some.

Artists can check out Tunetrax’s blog to get tips on how to best manage their social media.

4. HOW DOES TUNETRAX HELP SIMPLIFY ARTIST SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT?

On Tunetrax, Artists can share any content onto all major social media sites and many others instantly, anytime from anywhere and from any mobile device or internet browser.

By using Tunetrax, artists can drastically expand their social media outreach, increase fan engagement, and save a lot of time.

Artists can instantly share any of their songs (SoundCloud integrated), videos (YouTube/Vimeo Integrated), photos (Adobe integrated), blogs, newsletters, and upcoming shows (Bandsintown integrated).

Artists using Tunetrax have access to tools to keep their fans informed and excited at all times. Artists can connect with new fans and also interact with music promoters, club owners and talent buyers on a whole new level.

5. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF FAN ENGAGEMENT FOR INDEPENDENT ARTISTS?

First, I think fan engagement happens not only on social platforms, but of course at shows as well. What independent artists need to remember is the music industry has and always will be about one thing: the relationship with your fans.

I think applications such as the one provided by Bandsintown and now integrated with Tunetrax, which allows independent artists to track the real time location of their fans, will continue to be key for fan engagement and development of an artist and their fanbase.

An artist may know how many people showed up to their gig last night, but it is becoming extremely critical more than ever for artists to know who their fans are to encourage valuable engagement and interactions with them.

In the future, I am anticipating more solutions and platforms such as Tunetrax will exist to assist independent artists by providing more effective tools to increase and manage their fan engagement activities.

6. WHAT OTHER ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR INDEPENDENT ARTISTS TRYING TO MAINTAIN A STRONG SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE?

Social media and fan engagement requires consistency and persistence. Start by getting a social media strategy plan together if you do not have one yet.

This will help you avoid making many big mistakes and get better results from your future social media activities.

Artists with a clear fan acquisition and social media strategy plans in place tend to have more success rapidly growing their fanbase than others who don’t.

Here are few more pieces of advice for independent artists trying to develop and maintain a strong social media presence:

  • Offer and share more than just your music.
  • Be responsive to your fans.
  • Blog regularly.
  • Don’t auto-post anything.
  • Post frequently without bombarding your fans. 1 – 3 times a day is good.
  • Get creative. Post good quality videos, photos, music clips, and updates that will stand out in the crowded news feed.
  • Encourage interaction.
  • Keep an eye on the number of people that “saw this post.”

Over time you’ll be able to see which types of posts receive the most views, likes, and comments. This will allow you to adapt a social media strategy that works best for you.
