In November 2015, Maddison “Muddy” Binkley and Ryan Mangold made the decision to form a band after a jam session that was filled with promise and potential. With their own background as musicians, they both brought their own qualities to the table that resulted in a simplistic, yet complex, and restricted, yet boundless, sound. Muddy comes from a background of listening to and performing songs by the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cage the Elephant, and Johnny Cash, which influenced the tonality of her voice and the non-algorithmic approach to her songwriting, and Ryan’s background consists of (but is not limited to) bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, which wholly set the groove for the songs that The Shakin’ Shivers would later write and perform together. The Shakin’ Shivers, as a band, found their most common interest in their influence by Jack White, and although The Shakin’ Shivers was not premeditated to be a duo formation, Muddy and Ryan felt that The White Stripes had opened the door to the possibility of a successful musical duo. By July 2016, Muddy and Ryan had established themselves as The Shakin’ Shivers and had played their first show -- an opening slot at Frankie’s in Toledo, Ohio. It was an event to remember: no A/C, sweat flying in the air, Muddy singing her heart out, Ryan ruthlessly playing the kit, all in 95 degree weather. It was very rock and roll, and it ultimately set the tone for the type of energy that The Shakin’ Shivers would seek out for each show. Since then, the group has remained mainly in the Toledo region, venturing out to Cleveland and Bowling Green venues now and again. However, in March 2019, The Shakin’ Shivers finally released their debut full-length album, “The Shakin’ Shivers,” which they spent the end of 2017 and the entirety of 2018 recording, mixing, and mastering. The album is a showcase of the band’s most popular and booming songs; with songs like “Backwards Sally” and “Choke on My Exhale,” the album emits the elements of pop, and having them alongside songs like “Give Me Your Light” and “Momma,” the pop element is then blended with a nice pairing of soul and emotion. Overall, the duo’s debut album is full of eclectic sounds that tie together the band’s capabilities seamlessly. As for now, The Shakin’ Shivers are promoting their debut album and are using it as a tool to push forward in their growing career. Their goal is play as many stages as possible and share their unique energy with whoever will listen. In a world that seems so complex at times, simplicity is the key -- that is what The Shakin’ Shivers strive to bring to the music scene. You can follow The Shakin’ Shivers on Facebook and Instagram as well as listen to their music on streaming services such as Spotify, TIDAL, and Apple Music, to name a few.
