Sparx Senyora is a South African rap artist currently based in Limpopo, Seshego. As a teenager in the 90s, he was influenced by rap artists like Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Notorious BIG. Sparx – using the moniker MC Dukes – and a friend formed a rap duo called NPA, and would mime to popular rap songs at events around Seshego and Polokwane city. Moving to his aunt's place in Soweto in the late 90s, he found a thriving Hip Hop scene, though rap was seen as a foreign genre, Kwaito being more preferred. Though rap was popular, local rappers had no platforms and only a few rappers like Amu, Ba Fihlile, and Jimmy B could shine a little. By the turn of the millennium, Sparx and some childhood friends formed an art and philosophy group called Senyora, whose ideology was centred on knowledge and wisdom. Since record companies were not interested in signing rap artists at the time, Sparx would recite some of his rap lyrics as poems around clubs in Johannesburg. He taught some of the Senyora members how to write and rap to beats around this time, resulting in many songs being recorded using whatever limited means at their disposal. As an independent rap group, Senyora printed an EP titled Mystic Rebelz in 2007, and the crew would perform at any venues they could since opportunities were scarce for rappers. By 2011, the group had dispersed but Sparx kept writing and sharpening his pen. In 2017, Sparx was convinced by his old friend to take rapping serious again, despite the fact that the current style of rap was different and uninteresting to him. Sparx began writing, rapping and performing regularly, composing songs over classic but modern beats, also retaining the Senyora consciousness and wisdom in the content.
