What is Soundpainting?
It is a multidisciplinary sign language that musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists use to compose live. Our own Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre Andrea Ariel studied with Walter Thompson, who created soundpainting in Woodstock, New York in 1974.
Soundpainting uses a language of hand and body gestures to communicate with musicians, dancers, actors, and visual artists to create a real-time composition in performance. The Soundpainter, or composer, signs over 1,500 gestures to indicate the type of material they want the performers to use. (Thus, we have been at ‘school’!)
