Since first arriving in Reno he calls “Reno de Janeiro,” Frenchman Remi Jourdan has owned a live music nightclub on Fourth Street, started a digital startup to help independent musicians from his home near downtown Reno, and coordinated multiple concerts and festivals across local venues.
Up next, he’s managing the musical portion of the Sept 8-11 Reno Tahoe International Art Show, in its first edition, with stages at the Reno Sparks Convention Center, a special night at Cargo and a gala at the Nevada Museum of Art.
“My role is exclusively booking talent, showcasing all the amazing talent we have in our area. There's going to be about 80 musicians and 17 performances in three locations,” he said.
Styles will range from jazz to blues, funk and pop, many of them coming from local musicians, who will all be paid to perform.
“I think that we tend to not think too much about our local community, as far as art and music. We tend to bring people [from] out of town. Post COVID, artists have been really struggling, not been performing. So the idea is … to support the local music scene,” he said. With rising rents and other inflation, many independent venues are also having a hard time putting on shows.
His digital music platform Tunetrax also has many Reno artists listed, and is a global endeavor he started from the Biggest Little City.
“It’s a self generated platform, so artists can sign up, it's free to sign up to the platform. The idea is for artists to create a profile, and [get] electronic press kits. They can publish the music, promote the music, to their fans, or music professionals to get booked. It's a very useful tool for artists to be competitive in [the] online community,” he said. He calls it an alternative to MySpace which before it disappeared club owners and booking agents used extensively to find and schedule musicians.
Once they make the jump to in person attendance, Jourdan urges fans to support their favorite musicians even more when they can. “You know, remember to support artists, you know, a little extra, you know, buying a CD, tee-shirts, whatever, because remember those guys didn't have any income for a very, very long time for the last two years. So, you know, it goes a long way,” he said.
Jourdan has had experience managing bars and clubs in Los Angeles and Paris, including the famed Moulin Rouge, which has been open since the late 19th century. In Reno, he was one of the co-founders of the Off Beat Arts and Music Festival which started in 2015. He first arrived in the Biggest Little City in 2007 after purchasing the Club Underground at 555 E 4th street, just as the Great Recession was hitting Nevada particularly hard.
Despite many challenges to keep that club open for as long as he did, Jourdan has fond memories of his Reno beginnings. “We had two stages, two bars and two different different rooms, one bigger room and one smaller room. I booked about 4,135 bands in five years. So that's about 80 bands a month, paying them, which was important to me as well, again, going back to supporting the local community … so giving opportunities [for] more exposure. I did a lot of all ages show as well, back in the day. I lost a lot of money doing that, but I had a lot of fun doing it. And you know what, today, when I walk in around the river and I see kids waving at me and saying, ‘Hey, how you doing, man? And like, you know, I have a hard time to remember them and, you know, they come to me and say, ‘you know, I remember I was 16, 17 when I first played your venue.’ That's pretty cool.”

Jourdan said back then metal shows and hip hop were the dominant genres, but that now the Reno style of music has broadened to appeal to all sorts of musical tastes.
Going forward, he’d also like to organize a music festival for the unhoused community, which would include paid for food trucks, haircuts and an outdoor stage. Jourdan would also like to reach back to his French roots and bring to Reno the “Fete de la Musique” which started in 1982, and now takes place in over 1,000 cities across the world on June 21st and into the night. The Biggest Little City has yet to have one. There’s paid events but also free outdoor musical events at all hours, in bars, restaurants, parking lots, coffee shops, parks, everywhere.
“That's something that would be fantastic to bring to Reno and let everybody be able to get involved, you know, and it’s free to get involved. Everybody can be involved during that initiative. So again, if anyone wants to get, involved [with these ideas], and help out and make that a reality, I'm all ears.”
INTERVIEW WITH REMI JOURDAN, CEO OF DIGITAL MUSIC PLATFORM TUNETRAX

September 3, 2018 | Music Distribution - By Uptown Plug
Originally from Paris, France where he managed venues, Rémi Jourdan relocated to Los Angeles in 1997 to fully pursue his passion for both technology and music.
With extensive experience working with emerging artists, labels as well as operating concert venues and producing music festivals, Remi has witnessed first-hand the struggles experienced by under-represented musicians in growing their careers.
To fill an immediate need for his musician friends and industry colleagues, Rémi created a set of DIY online tools for them, a platform called Tunetrax .
Today, thousands of artists, music producers, record labels, publishers and music fans have signed up to Tunetrax, and are in control of the platform and the online communities they created.
Uptown Plug had the pleasure of chatting with Remi to talk about the history of Tunetrax, how artists can best manage their social media , amplifying fan engagement, tips for independent artists, and plenty more.
1. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR HISTORY AND WHY YOU STARTED TUNETRAX?

I spent many years running concert venues and producing music festivals and have booked thousands of performers in my career.
I started Tunetrax because I saw the struggles independent and under-represented artists faced in growing their career as well as the time they spent updating countless sites to share their content on social media with their fans, and thought I could help to streamline and make this process easier and more fun.
2. WHAT IS TUNETRAX?

Tunetrax is an all-in-one platform that helps artists to self-publish, distribute, book and promote their music.
Artists can upload and share their songs, videos, photos, blogs, newsletters and upcoming shows, all shareable instantly onto all major social networks and many other ones– and connect and interact with fans, booking agents and venues.
Artists keep 100% of their music sales, control of their copyrights and how their music is getting published and distributed.
3. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR ARTISTS WHEN IT COMES TO MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA?

From what I have witnessed working with many artists, the biggest challenge for them is to keep up with the fast-paced and ever-changing worlds of both social media and music.
Having a clear social media strategy, being responsive and staying consistent with social media activities are some of the challenges facing artists as well. Being able to generate high quality content properly formatted for social media can also be a challenge for some.
Artists can check out Tunetrax’s blog to get tips on how to best manage their social media .
4. HOW DOES TUNETRAX HELP SIMPLIFY ARTIST SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT?

On Tunetrax, Artists can share any content onto all major social media sites and many others instantly, anytime from anywhere and from any mobile device or internet browser.
By using Tunetrax, artists can drastically expand their social media outreach, increase fan engagement, and save a lot of time.
Artists can instantly share any of their songs (SoundCloud integrated), videos (YouTube/Vimeo Integrated), photos (Adobe integrated), blogs, newsletters, and upcoming shows (Bandsintown integrated).
Artists using Tunetrax have access to tools to keep their fans informed and excited at all times. Artists can connect with new fans and also interact with music promoters, club owners and talent buyers on a whole new level.
5. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF FAN ENGAGEMENT FOR INDEPENDENT ARTISTS?

First, I think fan engagement happens not only on social platforms, but of course at shows as well. What independent artists need to remember is the music industry has and always will be about one thing: the relationship with your fans.
I think applications such as the one provided by Bandsintown and now integrated with Tunetrax , which allows independent artists to track the real time location of their fans, will continue to be key for fan engagement and development of an artist and their fanbase.
An artist may know how many people showed up to their gig last night, but it is becoming extremely critical more than ever for artists to know who their fans are to encourage valuable engagement and interactions with them.
In the future, I am anticipating more solutions and platforms such as Tunetrax will exist to assist independent artists by providing more effective tools to increase and manage their fan engagement activities.
6. WHAT OTHER ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR INDEPENDENT ARTISTS TRYING TO MAINTAIN A STRONG SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE?

Social media and fan engagement requires consistency and persistence. S tart by getting a social media strategy plan together if you do not have one yet .
This will help you avoid making many big mistakes and get better results from your future social media activities.
Artists with a clear fan acquisition and social media strategy plans in place tend to have more success rapidly growing their fanbase than others who don’t.
Here are few more pieces of advice for independent artists trying to develop and maintain a strong social media presence:
Offer and share more than just your music.
Be responsive to your fans.
Blog regularly.
Don’t auto-post anything.
Post frequently without bombarding your fans. 1 – 3 times a day is good.
Get creative. Post good quality videos, photos, music clips, and updates that will stand out in the crowded news feed.
Encourage interaction.
Keep an eye on the number of people that “saw this post.”
Over time you’ll be able to see which types of posts receive the most views, likes, and comments. This will allow you to adapt a social media strategy that works best for you.
Tunetrax is a new concept of music discovery where musicians build successful careers. The platform helps artists publish, distribute, and promote audio and other assets; automatically update their socials; and interact with and sell directly to fans, via one simple dashboard. Founded by a French entrepreneur turned club owner/festival producer, Tunetrax sprang directly from the struggles CEO Rémi Jourdan witnessed from both the talent buying and musician perspective. To save artists time and increase their chance to succeed, he developed a one-stop music platform that lets artists upload and share their songs, videos, photos, blogs, newsletters and upcoming shows, all shareable instantly onto 80 social networks. It also provides tools to help musicians connect with fans, agents, venues, and other industry figures.
Every concert is a community, and Live Music Loyalty amplifies the power of the people in the audience to improve fan experience and artist reach. The app (iOS and Android) helps identify who’s at the show and connects them directly with artists and their teams, musicians from Bassnectar to Bruce Springsteen. Users sync concert or festival photos from events like Bonnaroo or Coachella, offering a window into who is in the crowd, a step forward for a business that has relied solely on ticket barcodes and social searches to track purchasers. Artists can then offer these fans special perks and rewards, much like other loyalty programs, via post-event custom email campaigns and other marketing efforts.
Social apps are at their most powerful when melded with exciting, real-life events. Radiate concentrates that energy: the app (iOS and Android) helps people meet and interact around music festivals or other large live events. Users can exchange advice, obtain detailed information about the event (set times, lineups, etc.), and most importantly socialize, building long-term connections based on shared experiences. Founded by a former Google engineer and a 2nd-time startup founder, Radiate has already created over 2,000,000 connections between attendees of the 200+ festivals listed on the platform. With festival partners worldwide, Radiate has been used as the official standalone festival app for more than 40 music and art events like Secret Solstice in Iceland, Dancefestopia in the US, and Escapade Music Festival in Canada.
You’re at a social event, on an epic road trip, or at a nightclub. Requestify (on iOS and Android) allows you and your friends to connect to the music playing and listen to your favorite songs, no matter where you are. You can use your music profile, powered by artificial intelligence, to discover new music, events, and venues according to your music taste. Hosts (venues or DJs, say) can decide what tracks make the cut and users can purchase credits that allow them to up/down vote songs or to request that special party anthem. This ecosystem, along with a blockchain solution for payments and incentives for ad engagement in the form of user credits, makes for a truly unique and exciting social music environment for all.
Tech profile: Social media platform Tunetrax

Gear & Technology June 8, 2018 June 8, 2018 iSing Magazine

iSing takes a look at Tunetrax, an online platform that promises to take the hassle out of social media.
What is it?
Tunetrax is an all-in-one platform that helps artists to self-publish, distribute, book and promote their music. Artists can upload and share their songs, videos, photos, blogs, newsletters and upcoming shows, all shareable instantly onto 80 social networks – and connect and interact with fans, booking agents and venues. Artists keep 100% of the their music sales and control of copyrights and how their music is published and distributed.
Who was it created by?
US-based Frenchman Rémi Jourdan, who spent many years running concert venues and music festivals and has booked thousands of performers in his career. Jourdan saw the struggles under-represented musicians faced in growing their career and the time spent updating countless sites with new content and thought he could help.

How much does it cost?
It’s free to sign up to get started. Members can choose to upgrade to paid subscription options. These range in price from US$4.99 to US$24.99 a month. Members can upgrade or cancel their subscription at any time. All subscriptions fit the need of any size artist, from any location and any style of music.
What does the founder of Tunetrax have to say?
Jourdan says: “With Tunetrax singers can update their content across all social media. This is not as much about ‘switching over to Tunetrax’ but more about being able to update their social media networks within one platform, and instantly being able to share their songs, videos, blogs, upcoming shows and images onto 80+ social networks. By doing so, artists can save a lot of time and be consistent in sharing their content in social media. Also, I believe that centralising your networking can lead to better and more consistent professional outcomes.
“It sprang directly from the struggles I witnessed as a venue owner from both the talent-buying and musician perspectives. Artists were struggling to get their music heard, book more and better shows, and manage and promote their music online to increase their chances of succeeding. A lot of tools were out there but none were combined and available in one platform. After I had the original idea, a team of musicians, fans, promoters and software developers collaborated extensively to develop the best digital media tools and platform possible. We wanted to truly empower artists in the development of their career.”
Tunetrax would be good for..
Anyone looking to streamline their social media processes, boost their online presence or spend less time glued to a screen. It would be especially useful if you view social media as a necessary evil, and something of a chore.
Don’t bother if..
You’re a social (media) animal with mass of Insta and Facebook followers, or have a digital strategy that’s already working for you.
To save artists time and increase their chance to succeed, he developed a one-stop music platform that lets artists upload and share their songs, videos, photos, blogs, newsletters and upcoming shows, all shareable instantly onto all major social networks and many other ones. It also provides tools to help musicians connect with fans, agents, venues, and other industry figures.

we’ve been working with some fabulous musicians as a marketing consultant, helping them develop their marketing plans, define their music career business goals, and then execute against those goals.
AND we’ve also been trying to keep up with the fast paced and ever changing worlds of both social media and music.
So here is what we would tell you to do in 2018 with your social media if you were my music marketing client:
Understand your primary social media business goals. Don’t jump into social media just because you feel you “need to be on social media.” Are you promoting a new album release, an event or tour? Is your primary goal to increase followers or Likes? Or are you trying to get the attention of bloggers, press or industry influencers? Are you trying to win a music contest or raise money via Kickstarter or Pledgemusic or some other platform? Is your goal to promote coupons or discounts to encourage fans to buy your music or merchandise directly from your website? Your goals will help determine both what social media channels to focus on, and what kinds of activities (posts) to engage in. Set some reasonable, concrete, realistic, numerical social media goals for 6 months and for a year from now – goals with numbers and a timeline. It’s easy to get lost, sidetracked and overwhelmed in social media. If you’re not aiming at something, you won’t know if you’ve succeeded.

It’s easy to get lost, sidetracked and overwhelmed in social media.
Know who your target market is. What are the basic demographics (age, sex, location, artists they like) for your super fans? If you don’t have a big fan base, research the demographics of bands you consider your competition.

While you’re at it, check out your competition’s social media presence and best practices and copy them. The best artists steal the best ideas and make them their own – even in social media. Where does your competition post most often on social media? What kinds of content do they create regularly and share on social media?
The best artists steal the best ideas and make them their own – even in social media.
Don’t try to be everywhere. If you have not yet begun using social media consistently to advance your music career (or even if you have), pick 1-2 social media channels to focus your efforts on , depending on where your target market hangs out. The ones I tell my clients to focus on are YouTube, Facebook and either Twitter or Instagram. First, make sure your social media bio rocks. Make it the same across all your social media channels. Next, have a music video strategy and get your YouTube channel organized. Having a YouTube channel is necessary for musicians, since YouTube is the number two search engine after Google, and the number one search engine for music. Facebook continues to be the dominant social media platform for reaching fans and for advertising, and especially for reaching an increasingly mature demographic (Baby Boomers). But having fans like a page doesn’t mean they see your posts anymore – It’s a pay-to-play world on Facebook now. Learn how to create events and promote posts , as these are the two most effective means of using Facebook to drive people to your events and promote your music. Instagram continues to grow, and is especially prominent in the 18-29 year old demographic. Google+ is a good place to publish links to blogs and howto videos. Twitter is great for musicians as well, but you need to commit to learning how to use it effectively and grow your following, or your presence will languish at a few hundred followers.

Make sure social media is integrated into all your offline marketing activities. For example, have a business card with your Facebook page URL (create a friendly one!) or your Twitter or Instagram handle, add “Like [bandname] on Twitter for band news, concert updates and special offers” to your show banner, and make sure all your social media links are at the bottom of every newsletter you send out. Announce that you are on social media at shows.

Always bring people back to your website when you share. Don’t share tweets on Facebook or Facebook posts on Twitter – share a blog entry you wrote, or an album review summary on your website on Twitter and on Facebook. If you don’t have a website, c reate an artist profile and electronic press kit on Tunetrax . – it’s far too cheap and easy to create a good-looking music EPK these days. Include social media links, your latest bio, audio and video tracks, and your latest blog posts, as well as all your upcoming shows. You can also create your own store, if interest in selling merchs and your music thru your own Tunetrax’ artist profile.
Learn more about tools and services Tunetrax provides to artists
Make sure you are active on the social media channels you put on your Tunetrax’ Artist profile.
Your social media content is mobile-ready and your Tunetrax’s profile is mobile-enabled. People access social media via mobile in an increasing percentage. Access to Facebook and Twitter was over 60% via mobile devices in 2016 , and obviously Instagram has been a mobile platform from the beginning. It doesn’t do you any good if you create great content, distribute it via social media, and link back to your artist profile – but no one can access it from their smartphone or it looks crappy.

Content marketing (posting useful, entertaining or informative information in the form of music, photos, blogs, podcasts, videos, newsletters, Vines, etc.) is the heart of good social media in the 21st century for any business, and promoting music is a business. Content marketing is the best way to reach out to fans who might not be familiar with your music and bring them into your fan base. First, figure out what content you LIKE to create , and have the skills and equipment to create regularly. Like, regularly. On an actual schedule. (In social media academia, we call this a content calendar, but you don’t need to be fancy about it). If you like writing, write a blog. If you like taking pictures, get them up on Facebook and Instagram. If you like witty quips or inspirational quotes, try Twitter or Facebook. If your show posters are super awesomely beautiful and creative, feature those regularly on your social media channels. The bottom line is, if you enjoy creating something, you will keep doing it , and social media requires consistency and persistence. Fans respond best to content that is created on a regular schedule, and in a manner they come to expect and appreciate. Make sure you give your fans a way to comment on your content or respond to you, too – don’t post pictures on Instagram or tweet pithy quotes and then never reply when someone comments on it!
Social media requires consistency and persistence.
Be visual. Video and images are one of the big growth areas for marketing, especially micro-videos and video blogging. Make candid videos or something artsy with your smartphone. Native video is growing on Facebook, and tweets that have images are more likely to be shared. Create Vines. Make sure your blog posts all have multiple images included. Don’t feel like you need to do all of these things – just pick one or two at the most and enjoy them .

Don’t go it alone. Join some music-specific Facebook groups and Twitter chats. They’re great places to share and receive information and support with other musicians, and network for ideas, business contacts, and even recording or touring collaboration.
Few ideas of social media activities I will recommend for artists:
Snapchat scavenger hunt for free tickets to the show
Instagram videos leading up to the event to promote
Facebook live to announce details of a contest to win tickets
Twitter Live Chat with the band to promote the show
Instagram Takeover with the band
Facebook advertising targeting listeners who can enter to win a contest. Have it drive traffic to your website, capture their email address and put it in your database. Use email marketing to further advertise the event to your listeners.
Musicians weren’t given the right tools to promote there music and/or profile and fan participation was hard to find, let alone a reason for fans to participate. Our goal is not to solve the music industry’s problems, but to take advantage of today’s technology and give artists and music fans what they want, by developing a platform where our members control the direction and flow of the community.
