Description:
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. We began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of our favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participants Con Brio gave a spirited take on “When Push Comes To Shove.” “When Push Comes To Shove” was introduced by the Grateful Dead later in their career, first performing it live during the first set on December 15, 1986 at the Oakland Coliseum. The Dead played the Garcia/Hunter song in the first set the following two nights at the Coliseum as well, and kept it in rotation for the next few years. Recorded for the 1987 In The Dark LP, The Dead shelved the song after only 58 live performances, playing it last on July 17, 1989 at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin. San Francisco locals Con Brio were in town recently and swung by the JamBase offices to record “When Push Comes To Shove.” Led by vocalist Ziek McCarter, the band rounded out by guitarist Benjamin Andrews, keyboardist Micah Dubreuil, bassist Jonathan Kirchner, tenor saxophonist Marcus Stephens, trumpeter Brendan Liu and drummer Andrew Laubacher delivered an unconventional rendition of The Dead track. One of the things we love about the Grateful Dead songbook is the wide variety of arrangements and interpretations the songs lend themselves to and Con Brio’s “When Push Comes To Shove” is a perfect example of just how far the boundaries of these remarkable tunes can be stretched.
